Carl R. “Doc” Young, 80, of Charleston passed away peacefully his home on July 23, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Charleston and attended west side schools, graduating from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1949. He continued his education at Morris Harvey/University of Charleston, then received his MEd from WVU in1958.
Doc began his long career in education at Stonewall in 1953, where he taught biology and coached football.
After 10 years at Stonewall, he became vice principal at Charleston High School and was named principal two years later. In the early 1970’s, he moved to administration at the Kanawha County Board of Education and held several positions, retiring in 1989 as associate superintendent of secondary schools.
After his retirement he filled his time doing things he loved and serving others through various church related projects such as Project Love. He also was dedicated to his Lodge work, and held many titles within his long involvement with his Lodge. He was a member of The Blue Lodge #153, The Scottish Rite and The York Rite. The positions Doc has held include Past Master, Charleston Lodge #153 A.F. & A.M.; Past High Priest, Tyrian Chapter #13, R. A. M.; Past Commander, Kanawha Commandery #4 K.T.; Deputy Inspector General, Grand Commandery, Knights Templar of West Virginia; Puissant Sovereign, West Virginia Conclave Red Cross of Constantine; Member Beni Kedem Shrine A.A.O.N.O.M.S.; Past President, Past Master’s Club of Beni Kedem Shrine. His highest award was receiving the Purple Cross in Pittsburgh. Although Doc enjoyed working toward these goals, he always said what was most important to him was his relationship with the Lord our Saviour. You don’t “earn” your way to heaven, you simply accept Jesus.
Doc was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher and a founding member of the Project Love team.
He was preceded in death by his parents, S. Rudie and Clara Young, and his sister-in-law, Marilyn Harrison Young.
Doc is survived by his wife of 59 years, Billie Staats Young; children, Michael and wife Lynn of Westerville, OH; Stephen and wife Roxane of Fishersville, VA; Kimberly Dunnavant and husband Mike, of Jackson, TN; Kelly Parsons and husband Rick of South Charleston; Robin Workman and husband Charles of Chapin, SC; Jason and fiancé Jessica Pollitt of South Charleston; brothers Norman R. and wife Barbara, of Roanoke, VA; and Roger L. of Cross Lanes; 14 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Emmanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Stoner officiating. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens with Masonic graveside rites.
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
The family gives special thanks to the staff of Hospice Care for the exceptional care given and the love shown to their father.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Emmanuel Baptist Church, at 1401 Washington Street, West, Charleston, WV 25387, Charleston Lodge No. 153 AF&AM, at 107 Hale Street, Charleston, WV 25301, and Hospice Care, at 1606 Kanawha Blvd., West, Charleston, WV 25387.
